Kodinhi: Mysterious Village of Twins People

Hardly anyone would have heard the name of village called Kodinhi but this small village is famous world over for a most remarkable feat.  It’s not anything the residents have done intentionally; in fact they claim to be just as bemused as anyone else. So, what brings the world’s attention to this sleepy, lush green village which is 25 kilometers off Malappuram?

TWINS:  There are an unusually high number of twins born here. Kodhini, a town in Kerala, India, with a population of only 2000 villagers has around 350 twins. In the year 2008 alone, 15 pairs were born. This is a strange phenomenon in this town and a story goes that this trend started some 60-70 years ago. Globally, twins comprise just 6 of every 1,000 live births, while in Kodinhi they comprise 42 of 1,000 live births. This is a 700% increase.  India has one of the lowest twinning rates in the world, but Kodinhi is close to the top of the global twinning league.

What this means, is that you’re certain to see twins in almost every family in the village. All you have to do is walk around and they are everywhere: young, old and middle-aged, identical and non-identical twins: at schools, the marketplace, shops and offices.

Many funny stories are doing rounds in the schools about the teachers finding it difficult to identify the twins. The local people too face similar piquant situation. The identity crisis is not confined to schools alone. There are also jokes that the newly-wed couples of Kodinhi often mistake their partners for the other twins of the pairs in the beginning of their conjugal life!

The mammoth birth rate of twins in the village still remains as a mystery coupled with curiosity for everyone.

Nobody knows why or how this phenomenon originated!!!

Baffled doctors are trying to unravel the mystery of Kodinhi who is boasting more than 220 sets of twins born to just 2,000 families. Experts who have visited the remote tropical village of Kodinhi, in Kerala, have been left scratching their heads over the phenomenon that has seen almost six times as many twins born than the global average. Local doctor and twin enthusiast Dr Krishnan Sribiju has been studying the medical marvel of Kodinhi for the past two years. Although 220 sets of twins have been officially registered in the village Dr Sribiju believes the real number to be far higher.

The genetic, biological, molecular, heriditery and climatic factors of the puzzling phenomina are the subject matter of the research on the multiple births at Kodinhi . Its interesting to note that the women married off from Kodinhi and also married to the youth in Kodinhi too have been giving birth to twins.

Investigate the twin phenomenon, drilling into the legacy of the community to search for the origin of twinning patterns and genetic predispositions that might offer a scientific breakthrough. While the strange and wonderful phenomina of extra-ordinary concentration of twin births in this village continues, an in-depth study on the various factors to find out its causes has become highly essential.

Even as the researchers go back from Kodinhi with more questions than answers, 58-year-old T.K. Abdul Razak, a Gulf-returnee, says he knows what the secret is. He believes that children are God’s gift. “I don’t subscribe to such studies”, he says.

Cambodian Fried Spiders

Fried spider is a regional delicacy in Cambodia. In the Cambodian town of Skuon (Cheung Prey, Kampong Cham Province), the vending of fried spiders as a specialty snack is a popular attraction for tourists passing through this town. The spiders are bred in holes in the ground in villages north of Skuon, or foraged for in nearby forestland, and fried in oil. It is not clear how this practice started, but some have suggested that the population might have started eating spiders out of desperation during the years of Khmer Rouge rule, when food was in short supply.

Dolphins Help Save Dog from Drowning

Dolphins Help Save Dog from Drowning

On Marco Island, Florida a group of dolphins came to the aid of a lost Doberman that had fallen into a canal and couldn't get out. The dolphins made so much noise, it attracted the attention of people living nearby, who then rescued the dog. The Doberman was believed to have spent 15 hours in the canal water before he was pulled out by fire personnel and reunited with his owner.

One of the people whose attention was captured by the noisy, demonstrative dolphins said, "They were really putting up a ruckus, almost beaching themselves on the sandbar over there. If it wasn't for the dolphin, I would have never seen the dog.” (Source: ABC7news) He said also if the dolphins hadn't persisted enough to get their attention, they dog would have died in the canal. The dog had fallen over the edge of a concrete wall down into the water far enough that it had no chance of getting back up by itself. The dog was exhausted from being in the cold water for hours, and most likely suffering from hypothermia.

Dolphins have been known to sometimes help stranded or injured people as well. In 2007, a pod of dolphins formed a ring around a surfer who was injured and bleeding after being bitten by a Great White shark. The surfer survived because they prevented further bites. No one knows exactly why dolphins have intervened in such emergency situations, and helped save the lives of other species. Suffice to say they are capable of empathy and heroic actions.

Google Offers A Chance To Grab Google Glass For Public

Now, the first time ever Google is allowing the non-developers to get their hands on the device, with 8,000 of them obtaining the golden opportunity for free, according to ZDNet reports.

To get hold of the free grabs, the company asks people to post their opinions on social networking sites such as Twitter and Google+ about how they would use the glasses if they were given a set. Besides, Google has also asked the participants to label their ideas which shouldn’t be longer than 50 words, with the hashtag, #ifihad glass. In addition, the participants are also allowed to use upto five photos and a video up to 15 seconds in length.

The applications will be open till 27 February and the company will gift their product, Google Glasses to the competition winners through a lucky-draw game in New York, San Francisco or Los Angeles. The competition will be open to those above the age of 18 residing in U.S. and they would be offered to try out the glasses before they start off with the general sale. The company hasn’t confirmed the dates of availability, but it’s believed that the product would reach the markets by until atleast 2014.

Reportedly, those winners at the competition would have to spend $1,500 to get their Explorer Edition of Google glasses.

In order to jazz up the event, Google has released a new YouTube video demonstrating the user, interface, headset features and experience of using the product. 4 Outdated Technologies Still Used By People

4 Outdated Technologies Still Used By People

1.Beepers

Beepers also known as pagers are a simple telecommunications device used for short messages. These devices are set at a particular frequency in order to enable one receive messages of a few digits or even a number to which the user will call back to.

Today beepers may seem sadly unnecessary. But there are about 36 million beepers still using them regularly. Apart from the obvious clientele like drug dealers and cops pretending to be drug-dealing kingpins, many regular citizens use beepers as they could be an inexpensive alternative to costly cell phones.

For those who ignore calls or messages, the beeper isn't a good excuse. It makes sure to see whether you have received the information or not. A beepers battery life even lasts longer than a cell phones and is believed to never even die fast.

2.Floppy Disks

Floppy Disks are those plastic square shaped storage disks that people used to put inside computers to transport information. The problem was that these disks could hold a maximum of 1.44 megabytes – data as big as a one liner song.
But these disks are still being produced as many still use them. According to British company Verbatim, over 250,000 disks are sold in England alone, not to mention how many millions would be sold in Europe.

And what’s more?

Despite the constant push for technology, many people still use super old computers. They cannot afford to buy advanced machines or it’s a sense of ignorance. Dot matrix printers are still available today. They function slowly with irritable noise with not so clear information printed, but are available at low cost. Hopefully these machines will be replaced very soon to encourage a faster working environment.

3.Punch Cards

Regarded as an obsolete medium now, punched cards were widely used throughout the 19th and 20th centuries in unit record machines for input, processing and data storage. It is a strip of perforated cardboard that seems ridiculous in this age where everything is stored and archived electronically saving lot of time and storage space.

However, almost 450 million punch cards are being sold every year for use. The best consumers are government offices which choose to use them, in order to keep offline records rather than storing them online as masked lunatics on the internet can’t steal them. If you have wondered why they have dusty shelves with lots of files stored on them, punch cards would be the reason.

Even small businesses cannot afford to upgrade their systems every time. So using punch cards may not necessarily mean that they hate technology, it is because they are insanely cheap.

4.Dial up

It is certain that many of us might have used the dial-up connection system in order to surf the net. It would have been a boring experience. The dial up internet service only allowed connectivity to the internet at a speed of 56Kbps.

When you wanted to download pictures of your favorite singers and actors, it would take you as long as a day to even see the whole picture downloaded. This dual connection had always given two options – you had to either be on the phone or use the internet.
But the fact lies here where almost 3 million people still use dial-up connections. For low income households and people living in remote areas, dial up is the only option. Broadband has not even reached these places.
